
Yoshimitsu Yamada-shihan Obituary, Death – On the 15th of January, 2023, Yamada Sensei passed away while he was a patient at Mount Sinai Hospital. His passing was uncomplicated. He had been receiving attention from the medical professionals working at the hospital. His loved ones were at his side as he passed away, and they will always be remembered for that.
At this time, the members of Sensei’s family are working to put the finishing touches on preparations for a private memorial service. During this challenging time, we ask that you respect their need for privacy.
At a later date, the New York Aikikai will hold a memorial service in memory of the person who passed away. All those people whose lives were significantly altered by him and who held him in the highest regard are cordially invited to join his memorial service. We are ready for the likelihood that many of you would feel forced to express your condolences to the family in some way, and we would like to thank you in advance for doing so if you do decide to do so. In a short while, we will provide some suggestions for how to proceed that are relevant to the current circumstance.
When Yamada Sensei moved to New York City in 1964, he did so with the intention of taking over for his predecessor as the primary instructor at the New York Aikikai dojo. When he was 17 years old, he went to the honbu dojo, which is the headquarters of the Aikikai, to begin his instruction in the martial art of aikido. During his time at that institution, O Sensei served as his instructor. Not only did he found the New York Aikikai, which is now regarded as the most prestigious school for the study of aikido, but he also played a significant role in the growth of thriving communities for the training of this martial art all over the United States and, eventually, the rest of the world.
