Michael Smith Obituary, Michael Smith 84, of Shelbyville, Has Passed Away

Michael Smith Obituary, Death – Michael Dan “Mike” Smith, who was 84 years old and lived in Shelbyville, Tennessee, passed away at his home at 6:36 a.m. on Monday, January 16, 2023.
Visitation will be held at the Howe and Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville on Saturday, January 21, from 3:30 to 5:30 in the evening. A private funeral service for his family will be held at the gravesite in Jordan Cemetery, which is situated in close proximity to his home. His cousin, Gary J. Young, will act as the master of ceremonies for the occasion. As a memorial to the person who has passed away, in lieu of sending flowers, contributions can be donated to the American Heart Association.

Mike Smith, the son of Claude and Pearl (Lowary) Smith, was born on July 12, 1938 in the general neighborhood of Shelbyville. He took his father’s last name. He was a veteran who had fought in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and had graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1956 with the class of 1956. He had also served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. In the years leading up to his retirement in 2001, he was employed at Caterpillar in Decatur as a welder. Mike derived a great deal of satisfaction from tending to the land, creating things with his own two hands, cultivating his garden, and living on the farm the family owned. In the year 1997, during the month of July, he and Susan “Sue” K. Boyle exchanged their vows and became husband and wife.

He is survived by his wife, Sue; sons Michael D. Smith of Mattoon, Mark D. Smith (Stacey) of Berryville, Virginia, and Matthew D. Smith of Lexington, Kentucky; daughter Sara Sixel (Travis) of Greenville, Wisconsin; and daughter Beth Massey (Tyson) of Effingham; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served in the Korean War. His parents and his sister Carole S. Ulmer all passed away before he did. He was the last surviving member of his family.
