LAKE ELSINORE POLICE SHOOTING – An investigation into the fatal shooting of a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy near Lake Elsinore resulted in the identification of the suspect on Saturday, while heartfelt condolences continued to pour in for the fallen law enforcement officer.
Deputy Darnell Calhoun, 30 years old, had been with the department for a little over a year when he was fatally shot on Friday while responding to a domestic violence and child custody call in Lakeland Village. He later passed away at a hospital after being taken there.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect, identified as Jesse Navarro, a resident of Lake Elsinore who is 42 years old, was shot by another deputy who responded to the scene and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
During a press conference held on Friday evening in front of the Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, Sheriff Chad Bianco broke the news that Calhoun had passed away.
Bianco expressed his frustration by stating, “I shouldn’t be here tonight having to do this again.” “It fills me with utter despair to inform you that another one of our deputy sheriffs passed away today after being killed in the line of duty.”
