On October 18th, 1972 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, Heather Lee Opdahl was born to her parents, Donald and Fae (Van Stone) Dayton. She went to Warner High School after completing her elementary and secondary education in Stratford, where she also grew up. After that, she spent two years at Northern State College in Aberdeen, and then another six years at South Dakota State University in Brookings, where she eventually earned her Ph.D. in Pharmacy in the year 1998.

Heather Opdahl and Troy Opdahl first crossed paths at the South Dakota State Fair, where both of them were showing dairy cattle, while Heather was still a student. At St. Michaels Church in Clark, South Dakota, on the 20th of June in 1992, she wed Troy. The couple spent the most of their married life on an estate located close to Hayti, South Dakota. On October 23, 2001, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Taryn Lee Opdahl, while they were still residing in this house.

They bought an acreage in the rural Hazel/Thomas region in 2006, and that is where they have been living ever since they made the purchase. In the same year (2006), they were blessed with a second child, a daughter named Talayna Marie Opdahl, who was also born on October 23. Following graduation from college, Heather worked as a Pharmacist at the Huron Regional Hospital for a period of one year. After that, she started a profession as a Pharmacist at Econo and stayed there for ten years. After Econo went out of business, she was able to find work in the pharmacy at Hy-Vee, where she remained employed until she was physically unable to continue working. Heather took a lot of pleasure in her work and absolutely cherished the opportunities she had to assist other people.
