Brian Byrnes Obituary, Death – After a valiant but swift fight against cancer, Brian Byrnes, a longtime resident of South Boston and Dorchester who passed away on January 16, 2023, passed away in peace with his family by his side. Brian had 68 years under his belt at the time. Those who were saddened by the passing of Walter C. Byrnes, Jr. were Marie Laundry and her husband Wayne of South Boston, Paula Byrnes and her wife Cathy Carlton of North Fort Myers, FL, Ellen Hartrey, Walter C. Byrnes, III and his wife Susan, all of Wakefield, and the late Karen Byrnes and Julie Devlin. Walter C. Byrnes, Jr. was the beloved son of Mary R. (McDonough) Mary Nave, who lived in South Boston, adored her nephew.

He leaves behind a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, other relatives, and dear friends. Brian was born and reared in South Boston on National Street, and he received his high school education in South Boston. He attended the University of Massachusetts Boston and received his bachelor’s degree from there. In addition, Brian has a master’s degree in public administration that he earned from Suffolk University. After that, he received his education at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. At the age of 19, Brian started his long career in public administration at Little City Hall in South Boston. He retired as the Special Sheriff of Suffolk County after serving in that role for many years.

Following his retirement, Brian started his second career at Bunker Hill Community College, where he taught psychology and sociology as an adjunct professor. Brian made the most of the difficult circumstances he was in. Brian spent his 68 years traveling the world and eventually made his home in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where he currently resides for six months out of the year. However, he never lost touch with his South Boston roots. Brian was a man who had strong convictions about the importance of family, loyalty, and friendship. He was always willing to lend a hand to a member of his family or a close friend. He had the ability to command attention and was a delight to be around. The quick wit and hilarious antics that Brian possessed will live on in our memories.
